Projects > After school CLUBS
Having introduced our Education Support Programme in the form of After School Clubs in February 2014, we now provide education support clubs to over 300 children between the ages of 6 and 18 years.
Our goal is to expand these Clubs to reach 1500 children in Crossroads township in partnership with our three local Primary School partners: Vukani, Bongolethu and Zanemfundo Primary Schools.
The After School Clubs’ focus is on improving each child’s abilities in English , Maths and in future, Science. Throughout the country, children are struggling to gain proficiency in these core subjects. Poor retention of learners until matric aside, according to the SA Education Department of all of the country’s grade 12 learners, less than 43% take Maths and less than 32% take Science until matric. Still fewer pass.
Without a good foundation in English, (the technical language required to understand Maths and Science concepts) a barrier is created to learning, especially for children where English is their second or third language. Furthermore, all of the top 100 scarce skills and high demand occupations in South Africa require Maths and Science proficiency. In other words, if we do not help rectify the inequality of Maths and Science teaching and learning in our disadvantaged schools, we will continue to raise a generation of children who are unable to find employment in the South African job market.
Our After School team includes Tutors, Social Workers, Teachers and Parents. Together, they form a special team to help children succeed in all areas.
