Ntombozuko Ndabambi
Learner Education Support Tutor Ntombozuko also known as Nohnahna 22-year-old from Phillippi. She has been with Beautiful Gate for the past 3 years. Ntombozuko started off as a life skills youth facilitator at the Phillippi container branch/site, during her time at the container/site she has built relationships with the youth who are now part of the academic support. With the Learner Education Support program she tutors Grade 6 and 7 supporting them with Mathematics and English. It was a big change for her from being a life skills facilitator, facilitating youth to working with children. Ntombozuko says “I had to learn how to work with children who are in school as well as learning their subjects and how to engage with them”. Because reading skills are part of the tutoring, as a tutor you must read stories for children as well. It’s a fun job says Ntombozuko because she went to the same primary school as the children and she is close with their teachers as well, in terms of support teachers are with her. She also facilitates dance for the children as an extra mural activity and ice breakers for them before class. One of her favorite quotes is “Be the change you want to be” Ntombozuko wants to go back to school and study something related to children, either teaching or child psychology. Thabo Mthambeka is the I.T guy and sport coach at age 25 years he manages to do both jobs at once. Thabo's mornings are always craze he says, its fixing people's computers and laptops. His whole team has about 60 children who are in the sport team and they are from Lower Crossroads. The boys come from different schools around Lower Crossroads. The sport had been placed on hold for a few months where Thabo had to focus on I.T a lot because our staff member number is growing.
Most children had to stop coming from Beautiful Gate to participate in soccer but with the dedication that Thabo has , he decided to call parents to bring kids back to the soccer club. Children couldn't cope with just academics, parents said. when the sport started the kids enjoyed after school classes more. Thabo's concerns include the soccer team practice shoes and clothes because they also practice in winter, some children have no shoes to practice with and so they wear their school shoes or come to soccer practice bare foot. There isn't enough funding for extra mural activities and some activities which are organised by the learner education support programme are on voluntary. This doesn't stop the boys from scoring goals at all. When Thabo is not fixing computers he spends his time grooming the boys, the boys play so well and they were taken to the Ajax Cape Town junior sports games and one of the boys got selected for the trials. Christofel Cuba is A learner education support tutor at Beautiful Gate S.A and he is good with sales force. Chris also heads up the soccer team at the Philippi container where the Learner Education support site is. Chris just loves sports..
Here's what his day looks like at Beautiful Gate. Around 6am. I check the weather immediately when I wake up, I cycle alone from home to Muizenberg beach which takes about 2 hours or at least 2 hours and a half. I come back quick to take a bathe and then cycle to work. 09h00: I get to work on my bicycle and first thing I do is coffee and then emails, I am a Sales Force “genius” if I may put it that way. I check Sales force and fix errors if there are any. 12h00: Prepare for class, actually I prepare what I need to do in class because we attend workshops with Wordworks and we learn a lot games and ideas on how to do literacy in class, so I use those ideas in my class as well. It’s a lot of preparation. 13h00: Its lunch time so I do not take lunch outside. I sit on my desk while eating. 14h00: I’m curious about Sales Force so I’m always checking what’s new or what can I learn every day. 14h30: I cycle to the container where I we do the after school programme. We don’t our programme in a school, so we have old containers where the children can do their homework after school and do extra mural activities. 15h00: At this time, I am in class and we check home works and do activities. If it’s not raining outside, we practice soccer. 16h30: The children prepare their snack which is a nutritious meal with fruit. Then we do the dishes and go home. 17h00: I stay behind with soccer boys and we have our meetings because I like to do checkups to hear about their class or day. Then I cycle home. 18h00: When I get home I take my dogs out for a walk then we come back and have supper. Chris Cuba Luyolo Ruka is A learner education support coordinator/Tutor at Beautiful Gate S.A
Here's what his day looks like at Beautiful Gate. Around 7am: I would get up in the morning and get ready for work. I start my day with a prayer and that normally happens in the shower so it’s the singing that makes it special. 08h30: I do breakfast at home so by the time I am at work it’s just coffee and emails. I also plan for the day as well when i get to work. 10h00: Sometimes I have site meetings and team meetings so that’s part of my day as well. By 12 o’clock I need to sort out snack for children. I go out to the market to buy fresh fruit. 12h00: I check on my team to see what still needs to be done for the learners. 13h30: lunch is usually lunch on the run. I have to do weekly reports as well and monthly reports. As the day goes I need to document each day so that by the end of the week I have a report. 14h30: Now this time is busy because I drive the other tutors to their schools and then i go back to mine. 15h00: When I get to school the learners do their attendance register and a prayer before we start the class. I do homework checks and then if there is time for an activity I share it with the learners. If it’s extra mural activities day children finish class at 15h30 to do extra mural activities. 16h30: After the activities and homework we prepare snack as a class and clean up. 17h00: When the children leave, I lock up and go back to the office to park the car and head home, sometimes I just go straight to church before I go home. 19h00: The first thing I do when I get home is to eat and then read or watch television. Bra Joe is in his 40's and he is the only man participating in the Isibindi project at Beautiful Gate. Bra Joe is a proud father, children from the community call him Bra Joe. He has a children's soccer team where boys and girls play and he says the children are so dedicated to soccer that they even go to his house to fetch him for practice. Bra Joe started attending the Isibindi project with no knowledge he was the only man in the project, and when he found out, he had his doubts! He attended the project introduction and saw that the women in the project didn't treat him differently because he is a man. They are all trainees in the project together. The trainees in the Isibindi project also recently received Persona Doll training. Persona Dolls are a creative, interactive tool used around the world in anti-bias work with children and adults. The Persona Doll approach offers a practical and unthreatening way to ‘unlearn’ prejudice, challenge discrimination and develop psycho-social skills. Persona Dolls offers diversity training and materials on how to use Persona Dolls in anti-bias inclusion work, and a range of hand-made Persona Dolls. and everyone including Bra Joe were a bit skeptical at first when they saw the dolls but as the day went by everyone started seeing the purpose of the Persona Dolls, even Bra Joe had presentation time where he had to demonstrate the use of the persona doll during class. We are encouraged and inspired by Bra Joe! Isibindi is a partnership between Beautiful Gate, the Department of Social Development and NACCW. Through the model, trained child and youth care workers are deployed within identified households to provide much needed support services to orphaned and vulnerable children. These may include assisting them to get ready for school in the morning, meal preparations, assistance with homework, registration for social grants and psycho-social support, to name a few.

Crossroads ChildWelcome to a window into the lives and issues facing children in the Crossroads community on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa. Most of these stories centre around the children and families we work with at Beautiful Gate South Africa, a Christian non-profit organisation whose mission is to show God's love as we care for and protect children, empower and preserve families and mobilise our community to do the same.
