PROJECTS > Child & Adolescent hiv clinic
The Crossroads 2 CHC Paediatric HIV Clinic service was set up as a partnership between the Department of Health’s Crossroads 2 CHC facility, Beautiful Gate and Kidzpositive Family Fund, in response to the need for paediatric and more recently, adolescent HIV services in the community of Philippi and Crossroads.
Now one of the most comprehensive child and adolescent anti-retroviral treatment services in Philippi, the Clinic provides treatment for more than 524 children and adolescent youth aged 0-18yrs.
Beautiful Gate’s main role over the past two years has been to establish Adolescent Treatment Clubs, allowing teenagers to spend less time at the clinic and more time sharing and supporting their peers, receiving valuable information and emotional support to remain adherent to their medication throughout their teen years. We currently run four Teen Clubs with 20 teens in each: two Clubs for 10-12 yrs and two Clubs for 13-18 yrs.
The Clinic has 3 over-arching objectives:
1. To provide ARV medical care to children in the district, through a partnership with the Department of Health at Crossroads Clinic.
2. To set up Adolescent Services at Crossroads Clinic, reaching teens who refuse to attend a kids clinic and who don't make it to Tygerberg Hospital or Red Cross Children's Hospital for treatment.
3. To ensure that every residential child in the Child & Youth Care Centre has received medical care.
Crossroads / Philippi has a high infection rate of HIV/AIDS in children.
