The award recognises principals who are leading the way in providing creative and dynamic after school programmes at their schools. Mr Mlindazwe is the principal of Bongolethu Primary School where we implement the MOD YearBeyond Programme for Grade 1 to 4 learners to provide them with a safe space after school and focus on improving their educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy. We are excited to share our report with you on the #AfricaCodeWeek activities here at Beautiful Gate South Africa. We are very grateful to have been one of 60 organisations from 10 countries in Africa that received a Google Microgrant to make this week happen! Our sincere thanks to Google and the Cape Town Science Centre for administering the grant. Our Africa Code Week programme was held from 3-6 October during the school holidays. This allowed children from the local community to access the centre easily and gave us enough time to allow learners to enjoy the experience while keeping them busy during the holiday. We used the following modules: Cs-first (Theme Club: Storytelling) Scratch v456.0.4 (offline) Hour of Code (Code.org) Experimentation with Lego Robotics We aimed to give children who are not currently part of our coding club the opportunity to experience coding and computers and inspire a love for technology. We had 214 children between the ages of 8-16 years old attend sessions during the week. 53 of these were girls. Beautiful Gate South Africa gave me an opportunity to tutor math and spread the love I have for it. I want to change the mentality of learners seeing it as a difficult subject to an easy, interesting and fun one, especially in less privileged communities. Maths and science are in need and programming (coding too) is a rising need too. I want to encourage learners to take note that Mathematics is an interesting subject. When bicycles bring hope to children and families
Since 2014 riders from South Africa and around the world have made a lasting impact on the children and teens of Beautiful Gate South Africa, bringing hope and helping to change lives. Women, men, and children have taken part in the Cape Town Cycle Tour, as individuals and groups, challenging each other for a better cause, a #RideforHope. The funds raised have been used to support our HIV treatment clinic, to strengthen families and to provide educational support and nutrition in our after-school programmes. For children who didn’t have school uniform and stationery, the funds made a difference. For some children, the only meal a day was received at Beautiful Gate during the after school programmes. In 2017 we are continuing with our campaign with the help of people like you! Thank you to those of you that are riding, either in our charity group or with your own entry. Now is the time to start fundraising with your own online project linked to our Givengain RideforHope 2017 project. Motivate your friends and family to support you! And if you're not riding, please get behind our riders! This year we are focussing our fundraising efforts on our After School Education Projects. Not a rider? No problem! Get behind one of our riders or support our staff members, who are riding for the kids they work with. Or get your kids to ride in the Junior Tour and encourage them to raise funds and make a difference in the lives of children who don't have the same opportunities.    Melane is only 7 years old and is in Grade 1, and one of the top academic achievers in this year's school awards for English. Melane is part of our literacy programme with Wordworks (funded by The Learning Trust) that helps children learn and enjoy reading by sharing materials and making reading fun. When Melane started she was very shy because English is not her first language. With many kids struggling with English, we are doing our best to prepare our primary school learners for Grade 4 when teaching changes from their home language to English. Melane kept on attending the Wordworks program and our homework support sessions to improve her English. Her tutors were very patient with her as she is one of the youngest but brightest kids in class. We are happy with the improvement that Melane and other children have shown, not only improving in English, but in Mathematics as well. We will continue to partner with Wordworks and other service providers to help us improve the quality of education in our communities, focussing on one child at a time.  Lutho has two older sisters who are not at university but working to support their family. He is 18 years old and doing his first year at the University of Cape Town studying chemical and human anatomy. He comes from the community of Lower Crossroads where Beautiful Gate is situated. When he finished high school he decided to study and not do a gap year. Lutho said this would not have been possible if he didn’t come to our Youth Resource Centre. Lutho met with one of the career guidance and life skills coach's at the Beautiful Gate Youth Resource Centre. Lutho didn’t know anything about Beautiful Gate or a Resource Centre. At his school they didn’t have access to computers or a computer lab, so computers were a new thing to him. During his matric year he decided that he would not just enroll at a university but he first check his interests and then choose a career that he would enjoy. He went on to do job shadow at a day hospital in a nearby community with a letter that he got from his school principal. He enjoyed his one-week job shadow at the clinic and decided that he would study medicine at university. The Beautiful Gate Resource Centre had a huge impact on my life", said Lutho, "because I had access to a resource centre with all the information I needed in order to get to university and good career guidance. I got to learn how to use a computer and apply online for a university. It’s expensive to use the internet café and print out hard copies to apply for university. The resource Centre accommodates learners for free including free career guidance. This is not something that you get in our schools where we go out to career talks or get career guidance and access to the internet. Young people ignore what they really want and put things that they don’t want to do forward because of lack of guidance and knowing that I had guidance actually keeps me motivated. "The struggles will be there but you can get through them Lutho comes in now and then the Resource Centre for internet access and other services. The Beautiful Gate Resource Centre is open to learners and the Lower Crossroads community for internet usage, workshops, and events.

To open new lanes for the people by equipping them with skills that make them employable. Young people like Sipho have access to free internet and career coaching sessions.  Give hope a child’s future. Riding for children to get tutoring and excursions through the learner education support programme.  4.Challenging yourself. You can join our team and ride with the charity group, making it more fun and challenging to ride for a cause.  5."You really do make a difference. Finishing your race will mean a lot to you, but by supporting the right charity many others will benefit from your effort". Our social worker and the family strengthening team have been doing workshops in the community, training on Parenting Skills and "Let your light shine", which is about HIV/AIDS and takes 6 weeks of training, one day a week. This time both workshops were held in Philippi community. Usually, the majority of participants are women, but this time we had 3 men participating in the workshop. This is an improvement and we hope to get more men involved in these trainings in future. The participants had a graduation ceremony where they received certificates acknowledging their participattion in the training. The theme of the graduation was Heritage Day and everyone wore different outfits representing different South African cultures. We are proud to continue these workshops in the future with the support of our donors. Xoliswa Ngebulana. Her passion for working with children is clear because where there's children's educational or fun activities she is always present. She is part of the Learner Education Support team for the Phillippi site container as a coordinator for the site. Xoliswa started working at Beautiful Gate in 2006 as a bank staff member which was known as a part-time worker, she then got recruited as a team leader for the child care workers. From 2015 she started looking after the children at the site and preparing meals for them as well, in the kitchen you can trust her as well as with keeping things neat in the work-space for children. Her dream is to build her own after school facility for children and to be a business woman in her community.  Xoliswa Ngebulana  From being a volunteer to being a coordinator for Year Beyond programmer www.yearbeyond.org.za/ Nombeko has grown a lot , she is currently coordinating the Year Beyond programme in Bongolethu Primary school in Phillippi. Besides academics, she is a sports fanatic, she coaches the netball team at Beautiful Gate, with so many trophies with her team ,she is still dedicated to sports for teens. Her journey began in 2010 where she was a part-time child care worker and then started a homework club in the cottages for children who stayed in the cottages, she then moved to arts where she started facilitating dance and drama classes for children. In 2014 she became part of the after school team which is now the Learner education support club. Nombeko has 2 netball teams, her sports passion keeps her active.
